Where has the Tiger gone?
A poignant anecdote by the artist-author of this book inspired a die-cut cover
WITH TARA BOOKS
Where has the Tiger Gone? is a collection of traditional tales about the tiger from an indigenous community in central India, published by Tara Books. In this book, artist Dhavat Singh Uikey of the Pardhan Gond community offers a glimpse into a forgotten world where the tiger was both revered and feared, through a retelling of traditional Gond tales illustrated with richly symbolic art.
An anecdote in the artist’s narrative was the inspiration for the die-cut cover:
The rigid, vertical cuts on the cover attempt to capture the community’s present relationship with the tiger – obscure and harsh, worlds apart from what it was. This book was a rare instance where the cover, which is often the last step in the book design process, came together first.
