The Women I Could Be
Presenting ideas of identity and modernity through powerful visual storytelling and print design
WITH TARA BOOKS
The Women I Could Be features the illustrative universe of Sangita Jogi, a young artist from a conservative nomadic community in western India. Coming from a family of self-taught artists with a unique and imaginative style, this book reflects Jogi’s visual perspectives on what it means to be a ‘modern’ woman.
To reinforce the boldness of Jogi’s ideas, we chose a three-colour palette of fluorescent pink and yellow, complemented by an inky blue. Vibrant Pantone inks elevate the quality and saturation of colours beyond what the conventional CMYK inks can achieve, transforming the black pen illustrations into striking visuals.
The book’s layout combines poignant stories and fantastical illustrations, punctuated by bold typographical pages. This design approach invites readers to pause and contemplate the interplay between verbal and visual narratives crafted by the artist.
As articulated in its blurb, this book balances the limits of Jogi’s life as a woman with the freedom of her imagination as an artist. The design choices play a key role in bringing this vision to life, creating a rich reading experience.
